River dwellers who used to live in communities in the municipality of Novo Airão, 200 kilometres from Manaus, are trying to survive in the part of the Negro River where there is still water. The severe drought that the state is experiencing this year has caused families to move their boats and canoes, which they used to live in. Fish is the riverside dwellers' main food. Without drinking water suitable for consumption, they use the river's water for drinking, washing and cooking. At least six hundred thousand people are suffering from the historic drought. Fifty-nine of the sixty-two cities in Amazonas are under emergency conditions.
