AMAZONAS, BRAZIL — The Brazilian Federal Police (PF) and the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) disabled 11 dredges used in illegal mining during an operation at the Juami-Japurá Ecological Station, a federal protected area in the interior of Amazonas. The operation was carried out from July 9 to 13, and the results were released Monday (14).

In addition to the dredges, teams seized or disabled engines, generators, fuel and other equipment used in the illegal activity.

During the operation, three environmental violation notices were issued, with fines imposed. No one was arrested.

According to the Federal Police, the operation aimed to combat illegal mining inside the Juami-Japurá Ecological Station and remove structures used in the activity from the protected area.
