One of the victims of the explosion caused by a gas leak in a flat in the south of Porto Velho suffered 2nd degree burns to 100 per cent of her body, according to information from the Rondônia Health Department (Sesau). As well as the woman, the explosion also left her son, a young man in his 20s, with second-degree burns, mainly to his upper limbs and the lower right part of his body. Both are still hospitalised in the João Paulo II Emergency Room, according to Sesau. The moment of the explosion was recorded by surveillance cameras. The flat is on the third floor of one of the buildings in a condominium in the Novo Horizonte neighbourhood in Porto Velho. The Fire Brigade said that a leak in the gas pipe caused the explosion. The impact was so strong that it damaged the doors and windows of almost every flat in the building. According to witnesses, the explosion occurred when the woman tried to light the cooker to cook. The family pet was also injured and taken to a veterinary hospital. The flames were brought under control by the residents themselves and volunteers before the Fire Brigade arrived on the scene. For safety reasons, the water, electricity and gas supply at the site of the explosion was temporarily interrupted.
