The place where the medicines were found is located in the northern part of the city of Boa Vista, in Roraima. The incident took place during an investigation by the Police Station for the Repression of Crimes Against Public Administration (DRCAP) into drug trafficking in the region, when officers came across the abandoned house and found the medicines. In a statement, the Indigenous Health Secretariat (SESAI) repudiated the disposal of the medicines and said that they had been expired since "the past administration, as publicised by the authorities". It also said that it is co-operating with the investigations, "providing all the necessary information to the authorities". The Federal Police said they had no information to release to the press about the case. The Civil Police found that the medicines were destined for the Yanomami Special Indigenous Health District (Dsei-Y) - the Ministry of Health body responsible for the health of the ethnic group.
