Police seized more than nine tonnes of illegal fish in the municipality of Coari, in the interior of Amazonas. A man was arrested in the act of committing an environmental crime during a military police operation in the region. According to the police, a fishing boat was boarded in the early hours of Saturday morning (3), and during a search of the hold the military police found blankets of pirarucu fish. The seized fish was donated to institutions and riverside communities. The species is at risk of extinction due to overfishing. Legal fishing takes place in management areas, carried out by river dwellers with the appropriate authorisation from the responsible bodies.
