The harvest work reinforces the importance of rice to the state’s economy and to the role of Brazil’s North Region in supplying the country.
Even amid challenges such as transportation difficulties and falling prices, producers continue investing in the crop, which remains one of the region’s main agricultural activities.
Rice has been cultivated for decades in floodplain areas through irrigated systems. The plantations are concentrated near rivers such as the Rio Branco, Takutu River and Uraricoera River.
The activity drives local commerce and guarantees jobs and income in several inland municipalities, as well as in other states within Brazil’s Legal Amazon region.
