River droughts have caused the deaths of porpoises and manatees in the Amazon. The mammals are trapped on sandbanks in lakes formed along the rivers and are unable to get out to other areas. According to the state's civil defence, forty-two municipalities are in a state of emergency due to the drought affecting the Amazon region.
