This is already the second worst drought in the Alto Solimões region in 13 years. The change in the rivers of the Amazon has a direct impact on the lives of residents. Navigating at this time of year has become much more dangerous. Several sandbanks can already be seen along the course. The shallow waters limit the navigation of large passenger vessels and loads of supplies to the municipalities. The movement is being made by small boats called catraias. Even with this support, the catraieiros are also finding it difficult to navigate due to the drought. Almost all the municipalities in Amazonas are suffering the effects of the prolonged drought in the region; 42 have declared a state of emergency.
